About Davis Hagood

Becoming:

I am 26, have lived in 6 states and 9 cities, and held a bunch of disparate jobs. I’m passionate about nearly everything, constantly hungry to learn, and always looking for a way to connect it back to something. I studied marketing and management at the University of South Carolina, and it opened my eyes to the evils of unabashed capitalism. I held one marketing internship with a women-owned and led firm, and haven’t worked in the field since. I graduated and took a job with Epic Systems, a health records software company in Wisconsin. I packed my bags and left the comfort of coastal SC for the cold embrace of a Madison winter. I was 22, managing teams of people twenty-thirty years my senior. I had to quickly learn database management, healthcare, and change management. I saw how well an organization can run, and also how thoroughly they can chew people up and spit them out. I left the company and the state to move in with the love of my life. We’d been long distance dating for about a year, and I took the gamble to move to Tulsa, OK with no job lined up. I spent six hard months jobless and searching. I’d given up and found hope many times over before I found a job as a substitute teacher and operations associate at a charter school with a couple friends.

Over that time, I learned how to persevere anything. I burned through all my savings, but I never missed my half of the rent. That was the first time I tried writing, but I was depressed and doubting myself. My laptop had died on me for seemingly no reason, and I lost all the things I’d been working on. But once I found that job, I put everything in it. I took more than a 50% pay cut to do that compared to my job with Epic, but in the end it’s been worth it. I was asked to do everything for that school, from designing their desk arrangements for COVID to serving as a long-term substitute. If you ask my bosses, they wouldn’t have made it through the year without me. I turned that job into a coordinator position at an elementary school in Texas. Me and my partner moved to Austin so that she could pursue a master’s degree from the University of Texas.

Unfortunately, the school organization I was working for has seen their funding evaporate over the past two years, and as a result my position was cut. So, I’m currently working on a Tableau Data Analyst certification, and seeking opportunities to work as a data analyst or consultant for organizations that need some help looking under the hood of their business. I currently hold certifications for database management from Epic that I earned during my time there. If you’d like to contact me with job opportunities, please reach out in the fields below.

TASTES:

When I’m off the clock, you can find me playing pickup basketball, running, writing, cooking, watching sports, or playing video games. My ADHD makes it hard to watch movies, but I still make time for the important ones. I love music, but most of all Hip-Hop. I played guitar in high school and want to get back to it. In my wildest dreams, I produce songs alongside the brightest minds in music. In reality, I’m still working on how to put together the basics. I have a bit of a contrarian streak, but I know it and I try to separate it from how I really feel. I oscillate between a hundred different dreams for my life, and find it cruel that we get just one to live.

GOALS:

My goal in writing is to explore my interests and share what I love with the world. I find amazement in so many things, and hope to express that in a manner that’s both entertaining and informative.

If you’ve made it this far, I appreciate you. I hope you’re having a great day. Shoot me a message if you like. I’d love to hear from you.
